Cowboys rout Patriots 38-3, hand Bill Belichick worst loss as head coach: Reaction and analysis

About the only thing not going well for the Cowboys today is that their red zone issues continue. Coming into this game they were 6 of 15 scoring touchdowns in the red zone. Only the Buccaneers, Titans and Texans were worse.

Dallas is 0-for-3 today, settling for three field goals. CeeDee Lamb had a 20-yard touchdown catch, but it has to be inside the 20 to be considered a red zone TD.

Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy was a little defensive last week when repeatedly asked about their red zone issues after only three games, two of which were blowout wins. He did, however, note they would put more emphasis on that part of the game during practice.

“I think the reality of the red zone is we have to look at all the numbers,” McCarthy said last week. “I think clearly the fact that we’ve been down there 15 times, it’s the best in the National Football League. From my experience, that’s been the hard part. Clearly, the stat that we’re all talking about is the touchdown conversions, the efficiency. We need to clearly be better in that. The question was asked the other day about the red zone being No. 1 in the league last year, I mean we were 4-for-6 at this point last year. Fifteen to six, I’ll take that. We’ve actually scored more touchdowns down there. It’s a blinking light. As I told the team (last week), we’re three games in, stats clearly don’t tell the story but they give you things you need to look at.”
